Layer, 병풍,  the folding screen Performance

Moving Image, Painting, 2022

Women are expected to follow a predetermined path.  As daughters, females are born and given a name, and subsequently through marriage, they achieve their primary life goal of maintaining a household and living as mothers. They become folding screens. We naturally take for granted those who hold such titles, and as women ourselves, we also fulfill our roles and positions. By destroying the folding screen that embodies women's lives, we aim to face ourselves and reclaim our individuality.

Research

In Korean society, which is deeply rooted in Confucian culture, where gender inequality is expressed in the ideology of 'men are high and women are low,' and women live as social minorities.  Looking at my mother, who is the closest to me, the position I am currently standing in and the way I look at women in society have not yet changed.

I conducted interviews in Korea to explore the relationship between mother and daughter and how they are perceived, in order to investigate the position of women.  After conducting interviews and exploring the position of women, I analyzed the characteristics of traditional Korean object, folding screens, and presented a process of fusing them with the female identity.
