Layer, 병풍,  the folding screen

Moving Image, Stop Motion Animation, Painting, 3D Sculpture
2022

“Layer”, in the process of revisiting my social roles and positions, I have raised the messages of individualism, oppressed instinct, and rational rejection by means of exhibition and performance.

This Project shows “Layer” Folding screen is originally a 2-dimensional painting (layer 2), and a 3-dimensional object (layer 3) when it is used as a standing partition in a space. Characteristics of the folding screen include decorative features, symbolism, function, and these features are visualised using the body and layers to express and display in layer 4. As one goes through those layers, human identity fades, and then, what are left after going through the layers are only functions and roles. The folding screen simply records these processes while serving the role of the object expanding through the space repeatedly.

: Individuals are left with only goals and roles, having lost their sense of purpose.
The representation of life as individuals walking through an endless tunnel,
with people becoming folding screens, is depicted through the use of stop-motion and drawing collages.

Research

In Korean society, which is deeply rooted in Confucian culture, where gender inequality is expressed in the ideology of 'men are high and women are low,' and women live as social minorities.  Looking at my mother, who is the closest to me, the position I am currently standing in and the way I look at women in society have not yet changed.

I conducted interviews in Korea to explore the relationship between mother and daughter and how they are perceived, in order to investigate the position of women.  After conducting interviews and exploring the position of women, I analyzed the characteristics of traditional Korean object, folding screens, and presented a process of fusing them with the female identity.
